There are several different music industry careers for those who are interested in engineering.
One of the main careers in music for engineers is a recording sound engineer, working for a music label helping to produce the recordings and albums for different artists. They operate the soundboard and other electrical instruments during recording sessions. Some are responsible for setting up the equipment while others may have assistant engineers who take care of that. In this position they may also be in charge of editing and mixing the music tracks..
Live sound engineer is one of the other main careers in music for engineers. Usually this person can be found on music tours, at the theater, and other live events such as award shows. They run the soundboard during the live performance and are also usually responsible for conducting sound checks and the proper placement of the sound equipment prior to the performance. In most instances, an entry-level engineer will start as an assistant to the recording sound engineer or the live sound engineer and will work their way up the totem pole to being the main person in charge. Many companies will not offer on the job training for such technical jobs so a college or technical degree is a basic requirement.
Here are some schools offering such degrees:
The Recording Conection Audio Institute
SAE Institute
Conservatory of Recording Artists and Sciences
Live Audio Engineering
